During a TV interview the 1976 Formula One World Champion James Hunt said these words: " I'm terrified of dying because .. I'm having a jolly good time down here and I really .. don't want to change it in any way. I don't want to take the risk. I don't know what's going to happen when I'm dead, you know, and I don't want to take the risk. I'm happy as I am."
James was an extremely popular figure in the world of Formula One motor racing and a wonderfully talented driver. A former pupil of the famous English public school, Wellington College, he saw his first race on his 18th birthday, a club meeting at Silverstone, and decided he was going to become World Champion! The story of the 1976 Formula One season and the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda is told in the recently released film Rush.
Sadly, James suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of only 45 on the 15th of June 1992, 16 years after achieving his dream of becoming World Champion.
James Hunt publicly expressed his fear of dying, yet he was not alone in having that fear.
Only the Lord Jesus Christ is able to set people free from the fear of death.
14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Hebrews 2:14-15
Reader, has the Lord Jesus Christ set you free from the fear of death?
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
